200 years ago, barn design was based on abundant land and low cost labor. Barns haven’t changed much since then, but our lives, the time we have available, and our horse situations have changed a lot. Today, whether horses are our hobby or business, we need innovative and comfortable horse facilities that make horse keeping easier, safer, and more efficient. It is important to have time to enjoy our horses.
Lynn Long Planning and Design, LLC provides design and project management for complete equestrian facilities that improve quality of life for horses and enjoyment for people. Over the past 17 years, numerous equestrian projects have been designed and completed from Small Acreage Suburban Horse Properties, Rural Horse Farms, Planned Equestrian or Golf Communities, to Multi-purpose Municipal Equestrian Facilities. A specialty is Strategic Planning for developers of Equestrian Communities, using new and innovative formats that will be economically viable into the future and include more horse owners.
Whether new or remodeling, equestrian site and barn planning is regional in design and application. Design and construction challenges are very different between mountainous areas - with snow and adverse weather issues, arid climates - with wild fire concerns, and intensely urbanized areas - with layers of regulations to be met. A successful design in one area may not be the best elsewhere. Lynn applies vast experience and creative vision to find the best solution in varied locations for all types of equestrian facilities.
Lynn Long, principal, has over 45 years of multi-disciplinary experience with horses from breeding and foaling, to raising, training and showing horses in Reining, Western Show Events, Dressage, Hunter-jumper venues, and back country trail riding. She has won top awards at the AQHA World Show, and Championships in United States Equestrian Federation “A Circuit” Shows on horse she has raised and trained. To accommodate this quest for quality in her personal equine endeavors, she has hands-on built and maintained her own horse farms and barns, learning what works in practice, not just theory.
In addition to equestrian projects, Lynn is also a degreed designer and has provided interior space design and project management for large turnkey commercial construction projects. As a result, Lynn brings solid business principles to equestrian design and project management, and can also integrate the beauty and excitement of the horse into architectural projects of all types. A college minor in Geology has become invaluable in assessing topography, developing grading and drainage plans, and specifying materials for excellent, consistent arena footing for a variety of disciplines and budgets.
From this wealth of multi-disciplinary and practical experience, Lynn understands how to integrate smart horse accommodation requirements into beautiful and stylish facilities for their owner’s benefit, utilizing proprietary innovations that take horses and owners to a higher level of safety, comfort and convenience. Your project will be exactly tailored for your needs, designed within your budget, and be sustainable for your situation over the long term.

“It has been nearly a year since completion of our barn. We talk about how much we love it all – how we wouldn’t change a thing. It is so well thought out and suits our needs perfectly. The care you took with the layout and design was appreciated then and is appreciated daily now. We could never have pulled all of this together without you.. Thank you for being so much fun to work with, for your honesty and integrity and knowledge of horse facilities“
